PC Engines APU4D4 Multipurpose System Board with 4GB RAM

The PC Engines APU4D4 is an upgrade over the previous generation APU boards, featuring the same powerful 1GHz quad core CPU with 4 Gigabit Intel NICs all on the same 6 x 6" board.

The APU boards have a whole host of applications including but not limited to; A dedicated Router/firewall (pfSense), VOIP service, dedicated servers, special purpose network plumbing and even education tools. The possibilities are endless.

The APU4D4 is a conductive cooling device, it requires a metallic enclosure to cool sufficiently via the included 3mm aluminium heat spreader. You can find information on conductive cooling here.

You can find the detailed 4B schematics here.

Fairly easy to assemble into the supplied APU4 enclosure, although I've done it before with an APU2. I made a simple paper template to position the heatsink, although a couple of strips of cardboard would have worked just as well - you only need to position 2 edges of a rectangle. There's no point buying the pre-made template unless you are assembling lots of units. I fitted a 30GB M-Sata drive, which gives more space than I really needed. Installing pfSense does require a serial console lead to see what's happening and enter the appropriate keystrokes; it's impossible to do this blind. I installed from a pfSense serial image on an SD card. There are documented issues trying to use a USB stick, and it didn't work for me. My APU4 is now working absolutely fine as a home firewall and providing automatic failover between my broadband and an external 4G modem. The available built-in cellular and wireless hardware seemed too expensive and too much hassle for me, so I went with external units at the expense of neatness. Top-tip - save your config changes frequently when setting up pfSense; it only takes a few seconds and being able to go back to a known working configuration saves a lot of frustration.
